Lassalle, Ferdinand

(1825-64)
   German socialist. Born in Breslau, he attended trade school in Leipzig, and later studied at the University of Breslau. He participated in the revolution of 1848. In 1863 he became the president of the General German Workers' Association, the first workers' political party in Germany. The next year he was engaged to Helene von Donniges in Switzerland, and was killed in a duel.
